Perhaps the most interesting political discussions I have ever witnessed are going on here in the capitol city of WV. It is utter chaos as they ponder just how an appointment should be made and who should be named as US Senator. Very few are evidently considering the possibility of allowing the voters to have anything to do with the selection until 2012.
The prevailing wisdom seems to be that an appointment should be made, then at the General in 2012 two candidates will be voted on - one to serve the remainder of the term (from the date of the election until the first week of January 2013) and one to fill the next term. Then there is the little secret that we may well have another appointment as many doubt Rocky's ability to keep his Alzheimer's at bay until his term expires. Strange. Very, very strange. We could well end up with two appointed US Senators. Then there is the fact that they seem to really want us to believe that, in spite of Byrd's age and feebleness, no one has pondered how to make this work until this week...
